Vaughan quickly began writing scripts for major superhero titles across both Marvel and DC Comics, including stories featuring Batman and the X-Men.
Vaughan later shifted his primary focus toward creator-owned series, earning wide critical recognition for original titles such as Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, and Pride of Baghdad. In addition to his graphic fiction, he served as a writer, story editor, and producer on the television series Lost during seasons three through five, earning Writers Guild of America Award nominations in 2008 and 2009 for Best Dramatic Series.
