§Synopsis

01

Working as a nanny for the world’s grumpiest single dad should have been simple. Except I can’t keep my eyes off him. And he can’t keep his hands off of me.

Cade Eaton is thirteen years older than I am and barely looks my way. Until I get him into the hot tub one night for a game of truth or dare. Then all bets are off—and so are our clothes.

He’s gruff, a little rough around the edges. But broad-shouldered ranchers with calloused hands and filthy mouths are this city girl’s kryptonite. So who am I to resist?

But it’s in our quiet moments together that he softens. It’s when he takes care of me that I realize his hardened exterior is just a façade. It’s when I watch him go all sweet with his little boy that I really fall for him.

Someone convinced him once that his best wasn’t good enough. But I’ve never felt more cherished than I do in his arms.

My contract may say this arrangement is only for two months.

But my heart says this is forever.

§Our take

Heartless is a tragedy you can see coming, and whether that works for you decides everything. Meyer knew readers would know the ending, so she let the book darken on purpose, to show how a hopeful girl gets turned. Some readers find that moving and painful. Others find it predictable.

The nicest trick is how she builds the plot from Carroll's odd details: the Queen's temper, the famous tarts, the feud with white roses. It's a puzzle-box for Alice fans. Cath's ambition is small and specific, a shop of her own, which makes her easy to root for. Some readers find her too gentle to become a tyrant. Expect something more reflective and romantic than The Lunar Chronicles, not a thrill ride.

§Themes

A tragedy with the ending showing
Everyone knows where Cath ends up, so the book is about how, not what.
Baking as ambition
Cath wants to run her own bakery, a wish to steer her own fate rather than wear a crown.
Constraint on women's choices
Victorian-flavoured limits on what a young woman of rank may choose press her toward her fate.
Revenge as corrosion
Common Sense Media reads it as a cautionary tale about how revenge eats at a person.
Wonderland, reverse-engineered
Carroll's quirks become mysteries the story explains, with wordplay to match.

§How it was received

Publishers Weekly admired the worldbuilding and the slow-building secret romance, but noted the stakes are lower than in Meyer's Lunar Chronicles. Common Sense Media called it an engaging origin story with less emotional weight than her other books. A public-library reviewer who usually dislikes romance loved it.

§Read it if

  • You love Alice in Wonderland and enjoy spotting where a story's clues came from
  • You like villain origin stories in the vein of Wicked
  • You want a complete standalone with a deliberately sad ending

§Skip it if

  • You want the danger and high stakes of The Lunar Chronicles
  • A slow, setup-heavy opening and standard YA romance beats will lose you before the second half

§Before you start

Reading experience
The opening is slow and setup-heavy, and most readers say the second half is much more absorbing.
Reading order
Standalone. It's a prequel-style origin story to Carroll's Alice books and Meyer's first standalone YA, not part of The Lunar Chronicles.
Content notes
Some violence: a character willingly gives up her heart, and two beheadings occur; Romance limited to kissing; no strong language; Wine and cordials at parties; hookah smoking; Emotional ending and dark themes of betrayal and revenge may affect younger or sensitive readers.

§Common questions

Is Heartless a standalone?
Yes. It's a complete story with no sequel, and it isn't part of The Lunar Chronicles.
Do I need to know Alice in Wonderland first?
Not strictly, and some readers enjoy it on its own. One lost the thread without Carroll, though, and familiarity deepens the many allusions.
Is Heartless appropriate for teens?
Common Sense Media and Publishers Weekly both say 12+. Expect kissing, two beheadings and a sad ending with dark themes of betrayal and revenge.

§If you liked this

  • Wicked by Gregory Maguire — Meyer named it as the spark for turning a famous villain into a sympathetic lead, and the publisher recommends Heartless to its fans.
  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll — The source world. Meyer reread it and its sequel repeatedly and built her plot from its clues.
  • The Lunar Chronicles (Cinder) by Marissa Meyer — Meyer's earlier fairy-tale series, and the yardstick critics use when calling Heartless lower in stakes and gentler.

§About the Author

Elsie Silver

6 books in catalog

Small-town contemporary romance filled with high-stakes tension and witty banter has found a major audience through Western and contemporary series like Chestnut Springs and Rose Hill. Elsie Silver is a #1 New York Times bestselling author known for writing steamy, emotionally charged stories about headstrong heroines and the compelling love interests who bring them to their knees. Her work frequently explores tropes such as rivals-to-lovers, forbidden romance, and slow-burn relationships that culminate in dramatic romantic payoffs.

Career & Background

Silver was born and raised in Canada. Before launching her career as a romance novelist, she worked as a freelance academic editor. During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, when her editing work dried up and she spent her days caring for her toddler while her husband worked as an essential worker, Silver turned to reading romance novels at a rapid pace. She began writing her own novels shortly thereafter, starting as an independent author. Following widespread success with self-published releases, including her Gold Rush Ranch and Chestnut Springs series, she expanded into traditional publishing with major publishers.

Writing Style & Themes

Silver's signature narrative style centers on sharp dialogue, heavy romantic tension, and protective heroes matched with strong, independent heroines. Her books consistently feature humorous banter, high emotional stakes, and a deliberate slow burn that builds steadily before reaching an intense climax. Across her small-town settings, her stories balance lighthearted moments with deep emotional conflict, drawing on popular tropes such as single parents, workplace rivalries, fake dating, and forced proximity.

Major Works

  • Flawless — The opening novel in the Chestnut Springs series, introducing readers to Silver's signature blend of small-town Western romance, professional friction, and high-tension banter.
  • Heartless — A prominent entry in the Chestnut Springs series focusing on a single-dad dynamics and slow-burn romantic tension.
  • Wild Love — The debut installment in the Rose Hill series, featuring a small-town romantic plot driven by sharp dialogue and strong character development.
  • Wild Eyes — An entry in the Rose Hill series that continues the author's focus on small-town community ties and intense emotional relationships.
