Fall in love with the addictive, suspenseful love story between a teenage girl and a vampire with the book that sparked a "literary phenomenon" and redefined romance for a generation (New York Times).
Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife -- between desire and danger. Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite. It's here! #1 bestselling author Stephenie Meyer makes a triumphant return to the world of Twilight with the highly anticipated companion, Midnight Sun: the iconic love story of Bella and Edward told from the vampire's point of view.
"People do not want to just read Meyer's books; they want to climb inside them and live there." -- Time
"A literary phenomenon." -- The New York Times
Few books split readers this cleanly. On Goodreads the common verdict is bad but compulsive: purple, repetitive prose and stumbling dialogue, yet pages that turn fast even among critics of the writing. Publishers Weekly liked the danger at the heart of the pairing and Edward's struggle with himself in its 2005 review, but flagged a hurried ending where much of the action happens off the page.
The bigger argument is the romance. Many readers see a relationship the book frames as romantic that can read as alarming. Meyer has defended Bella against charges of passivity, saying valuing domestic skills shouldn't count against a character. She ties the book to Pride and Prejudice, and says it began with a dream in June 2003. She finished the manuscript in about three months, as a first-time author.
Reviews on release were mixed. Praise went to the suspense and the capture of teenage longing, complaints to the prose and the heavy emphasis on Edward's looks. Publishers Weekly recommended it for ages 12 and up while faulting the rushed ending. Critics still call the writing merely serviceable, while defenders point to the series' emotional pull.

Vampire romance and young adult paranormal fantasy experienced a massive resurgence following the publication of the Twilight series, which has sold over 160 million copies globally and been translated into 37 languages. American author Stephenie Meyer introduced readers to the intense relationship between high school student Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen, establishing a massive cultural footprint that reshaped teenage romance fiction.
Born Stephenie Morgan on December 24, 1973, in Hartford, Connecticut, Meyer grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. She received a National Merit Scholarship and attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in English literature in 1997. She married in 1994 and worked as a homemaker caring for her sons before conceiving the idea for Twilight from a dream in June 2003. After literary agent Jodi Reamer at Writers House secured a multi-book publishing contract, her debut novel launched a major career. Meyer was the highest-selling author of 2008 and 2009 in the United States, selling over 29 million books in 2008 and 26.5 million books in 2009. USA Today declared her Author of the Year after she swept the top four slots on their bestselling book list in 2008, repeating the achievement in 2009. Expanding into adult sci-fi fantasy, she released The Host in 2008, which debuted at number one on The New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, followed by her 2016 thriller The Chemist, which spent 50 weeks on the USA Today Top 100 list. In 2020, she published Midnight Sun, which became the second overall best-selling book of that year. Meyer splits her time between Arizona and Washington with her husband; writing remains her primary passion alongside her interest in Kpop.
Meyer's narrative style relies heavily on first-person perspective, immersive suspense, and intense romantic loyalty. Influenced by classic literature such as Jane Austen's novels, her books explore recurring themes of moral choice, personal sacrifice, self-restraint, and cross-species romance. By combining supernatural plotlines with contemporary emotional experiences, her writing emphasizes psychological tension and deep character interiority.
