During the late 1990s, Aaronovitch worked as a bookseller at the Covent Garden branch of Waterstones, managing the crime and science fiction sections. While shelving books by other authors, he resolved to write novels of his own. Fuelled by instant coffee and Japanese takeaway, he authored Rivers of London (released in North America as Midnight Riot). The book's commercial success enabled him to write full time, producing additional series novels and novellas including *The Masquerades of Spring: *. Aaronovitch lives in London with his family, including his son Karifa.
