Rivers of London,

Combining procedural crime fiction with supernatural urban fantasy, the long-running Rivers of London series seamlessly blends police investigation, magical lore, and rich architectural history. British author Ben Aaronovitch established this distinctive universe with his 2011 debut novel Rivers of London, published in the Americas as Midnight Riot, introducing readers to Constable Peter Grant and the secret world of London magic.

Career & Background

Born in 1964 in London, Ben Aaronovitch grew up in a household with several siblings and a dog named after a Russian cosmonaut. Discovering his talent for writing in his early twenties, he embarked on a screenwriting career in television. He wrote serials for Doctor Who in the late 1980s, as well as scripts for Casualty and the space soap opera Jupiter Moon. He later penned spin-off novels for Virgin's New Adventures line, along with writing for Dark Knight, Big Finish, and audio dramas for Blake's 7.

During the late 1990s, Aaronovitch worked as a bookseller at the Covent Garden branch of Waterstones, managing the crime and science fiction sections. While shelving books by other authors, he resolved to write novels of his own. Fuelled by instant coffee and Japanese takeaway, he authored Rivers of London (released in North America as Midnight Riot). The book's commercial success enabled him to write full time, producing additional series novels and novellas including *The Masquerades of Spring: *. Aaronovitch lives in London with his family, including his son Karifa.

Writing Style & Themes

Aaronovitch's narrative approach combines rigorous police procedural methodology with magical urban realism. His stories anchor supernatural elements in concrete London geography, architectural detail, and municipal history. He approaches magic with a structured, near-scientific logic, framing magical practice as something to be investigated and understood by law enforcement. His writing features sharp comedic timing, dry humor, and a diverse cast of characters reflecting the contemporary city.
