Like Water for Chocolate (Spanish: Como agua para chocolate) is a novel by Mexican novelist and screenwriter Laura Esquivel.
The novel follows the story of a young girl named Tita, who longs for her lover, Pedro, but can never have him because of her mother's upholding of the family tradition: the youngest daughter cannot marry, but instead must take care of her mother until she dies. Tita is only able to express herself when she cooks.
Esquivel employs magical realism to combine the supernatural with the ordinary throughout the novel.

Thomas Christensen is an American author, translator, editor, and publisher whose work bridges international literature, historical narrative, and art history. In addition to translating major Spanish and French literary figures, he has written extensive works on global history and culture.
Born in Myrtle Point, Oregon, on September 29, 1948, Christensen pursued advanced degrees in comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Following extensive travel throughout Latin America, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he established a distinguished career in trade publishing. He served as an editor and publishing executive at independent presses including North Point Press and Mercury House, and later became director of publications at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. He has also served as a contributing editor for the Catamaran Literary Reader.

His collaborative and solo translation projects have introduced English-speaking audiences to foundational voices in twentieth-century and contemporary literature.
Christensen's non-fiction and editorial projects frequently center on global historical connections, cultural exchange, and the intersection of art and literature. In historical studies such as 1616: The World in Motion, he weaves together interconnected global narratives from a single pivotal year, showcasing early maritime exchange and cross-cultural encounters across continents.
As a translator, Christensen focuses on stylistic fidelity and cultural nuance, working across poetry, essays, and novels from Spanish and French originals. His translations span complex surrealist and magical realist prose by authors such as Julio Cortazar, Carlos Fuentes, Julio Cortazar, Alejo Carpentier, and Louis-Ferdinand Celine, as well as political memoirs and poetry collections like Jose Angel Valente's Landscape with Yellow Birds.
