Career & Background

Born in Myrtle Point, Oregon, on September 29, 1948, Christensen pursued advanced degrees in comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Following extensive travel throughout Latin America, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he established a distinguished career in trade publishing. He served as an editor and publishing executive at independent presses including North Point Press and Mercury House, and later became director of publications at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. He has also served as a contributing editor for the Catamaran Literary Reader.

Alongside his wife and co-translator Carol Christensen, he has lived in Richmond, California, while maintaining an active career as both a prose writer and translator. His collaborative and solo translation projects have introduced English-speaking audiences to foundational voices in twentieth-century and contemporary literature.
