"Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for—and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion.
Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon's bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation.
When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone—even foreigners—wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones—and of Kekon itself."-- Provided by Amazon

Combining martial arts cinema aesthetics with gangland crime drama, the epic urban fantasy trilogy The Green Bone Saga redefined how modern magic systems interact with family dynamics and geopolitical conflict. Canadian-American speculative fiction author Fonda Lee established her reputation in adult fantasy through this acclaimed series, beginning with the World Fantasy Award-winning novel Jade City.
Beyond her flagship fantasy series, Lee has written science fiction novels such as Zeroboxer and The Last Contract of Isako, alongside the standalone fantasy novella Untethered Sky. Her work spans young adult and adult speculative fiction, earning major genre honors including the World Fantasy and Locus awards.
Fonda Lee was born on March 10, 1979, and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She earned an MBA from Stanford University and worked as a corporate strategist and management consultant before transitioning to full-time writing. Lee attended the Viable Paradise writing workshop in 2014 and published her debut young adult science fiction novel, Zeroboxer, in 2015, which was selected as a finalist for the Andre Norton Award.
Following her debut, Lee expanded her science fiction bibliography with the Exo duology, comprising Exo and Cross Fire. In 2017, she published Jade City, launching The Green Bone Saga, which also includes the sequel novels Jade War and Jade Legacy, the prequel novella The Jade Setter of Janloon, and the short story collection Jade Shards. Lee holds black belts in karate and kung fu, and currently resides in Portland, Oregon. Her recent works include the standalone fantasy novella Untethered Sky, the science fiction novel The Last Contract of Isako, and Breath of the Dragon, co-written with Shannon Lee.
Lee's writing frequently integrates detailed martial arts choreography with structured political worldbuilding and complex family relationships. Her background as a martial artist informs the physical combat mechanics across her fantasy and science fiction works, while her corporate strategy experience influences her portrayal of institutional power, family business dynasties, and economic conflict.
Her narratives explore recurring themes of loyalty, family honor, legacy, and the social ramifications of rare or controlled resources. From the bio-kinetic jade trade in Jade City to zero-gravity combat sports in Zeroboxer and giant-beast falconry in Untethered Sky, Lee creates distinct speculative settings driven by grounded human conflict and high-stakes moral dilemmas.
