Contemporary queer romance frequently finds one of its most popular settings in professional sports, where the high-stakes world of ice hockey provides a dramatic backdrop for male/male love stories. Canadian author Rachel Reid achieved widespread recognition through her Game Changers series, particularly the breakout novel Heated Rivalry, which follows the decade-long secret romance between rival hockey superstars Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.
Career & Background
Rachel Reid is the pen name of Rachelle Goguen, who was born on September 2, 1980, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She adopted her pen name because she found it much easier to say, spell, and remember than her birth name. Reid has spent her entire life in Nova Scotia, where she lives with her family. Before becoming a published novelist, she completed two academic degrees—which she humorously describes as boring—raised two kids, and worked as a burlesque dancer. A fan of hockey since childhood, Reid secretly drafted her debut novel, Game Changer, without informing her husband or parents until shortly before its release. Published by Carina Press in 2018, the book launched her popular Game Changers male/male romance series, which has since achieved New York Times bestseller status and been adapted into a television series titled Heated Rivalry.
Writing Style & Themes
Reid's writing combines humorous, explicit adult content—which she openly describes as cute, romantic smut—with tender character development and emotionally resonant storytelling. Her narratives focus on male/male relationships, closeted professional athletes, forbidden romance, and navigating high-pressure team sports. Grounded in a commitment to queer joy, her books consistently deliver optimistic themes and guaranteed happy endings. Beyond her central hockey series, she has expanded her bibliography with standalone romance novels such as Time to Shine and The Shots You Take.
