Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.
For Mitch Albom, that person was his college professor Morrie Schwartz.
Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn’t you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?
Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man’s life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live. “The truth is, Mitch,” he said, “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”

Inspirational non-fiction and philosophical fiction exploring human connection, mortality, and moral purpose reached millions of readers through the memoir Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man and Life's Greatest Lesson. American writer Mitchell David "Mitch" Albom originally documented his weekly conversations with his former college professor, Morrie Schwartz, who was dying from ALS, creating a book that became a long-running bestseller and established his signature approach to reflective storytelling. His subsequent novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, expanded this thematic focus into speculative fiction by examining how interconnected human lives affect one another beyond death.
Born on May 23, 1958, in Passaic, New Jersey, Albom pursued his education at Brandeis University, earning a bachelor's degree, and later attended Columbia University, where he received a master's degree and an MBA. He built a prominent early career as a sports journalist and columnist for the Detroit Free Press while also working as a radio and television broadcaster, dramatist, screenwriter, and musician. His literary profile expanded substantially in the late 1990s following the release of his memoirs and novels, which have sold over 35 to 42 million copies worldwide across 51 territories and 48 languages and generated Emmy Award-winning television film adaptations.
In addition to his media and publishing work, Albom established major charitable initiatives inspired by his mentor's principle that giving is living. In 2006, he founded the nonprofit SAY Detroit, which funds health, housing, and education programs for Detroit residents through initiatives that include a social-enterprise dessert shop and popcorn line. He also operates the Have Faith Haiti orphanage in Port-au-Prince, managing philanthropic endeavors alongside his writing.
Albom's writing frequently centers on themes of existential reflection, second chances, redemption, and the enduring impact of human relationships across time. His narrative technique pairs accessible, conversational prose with moral allegories, combining real-life personal histories or speculative afterlife scenarios with reflections on grief, forgiveness, and gratitude. Through both non-fiction memoirs and contemporary fables, his works present concise life lessons derived from personal dialogues, philosophical questions, and interconnected character arcs.
