§Synopsis

01

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

Reinventing classic folklore and mythology through Young Adult fantasy fiction, the multi-volume narratives created by Renée Ahdieh have reached international audiences and landed atop bestseller lists worldwide. The American-Korean author achieved wide recognition with her debut novel, The Wrath and the Dawn, a reimagining of One Thousand and One Nights that spawned a #1 New York Times bestselling series translated into many languages.

Career & Background

Born on July 7, 1983, in Seoul, South Korea, Ahdieh spent the earliest years of her childhood living in a South Korean high-rise before her family moved to the United States. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she completed her undergraduate degree. Ahdieh launched her publishing career in 2015 with The Wrath and the Dawn, followed by its companion novel The Rose and the Dagger. She expanded her literary repertoire with the feudal Japan-inspired Flame in the Mist series and The Beautiful quartet set in 1870s New Orleans, alongside the picture book Emilio Sloth's Modern Manners and her debut adult novel, Park Avenue. She currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her family.

Writing Style & Themes

Ahdieh's narrative style is characterized by atmospheric world-building, high-stakes political drama, and vivid descriptions of regional culture, sensory details, and fashion. Her fiction regularly explores themes of loyalty, vengeance, ancient curses, and complex romantic alliances set against rich historical or fantastical backdrops. Whether reworking Middle Eastern lore, samurai-era intrigue, or paranormal historical romance, her work blends intricate plot structure with emotionally grounded character development.
