Born on March 18, 1932, in Reading, Pennsylvania, John Hoyer Updike grew up in nearby Shillington as the son of a teacher and an author. He attended Harvard University, graduating summa cum laude in 1954, before spending a year studying fine arts at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford. Between 1955 and 1957, he served on the staff of The New Yorker, launching a decades-long relationship with the magazine where much of his short fiction and criticism first appeared. Over a career spanning more than fifty books, he published novels, short story collections, poetry, children's literature, and extensive art and literary criticism prior to his death on January 27, 2009, in Danvers, Massachusetts.
Known for meticulous prose craftsmanship and keen observational detail, his writing focused on American middle-class life, small-town domesticity, religion, and personal identity. One of only four authors to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice, his distinguished body of work earned major recognitions including the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Howells Medal.
