O'Neill's graphic novels are widely recognized for their inclusive narratives, thoughtful portrayals of LGBTQ+ themes, and gentle approach to world-building across public and school library collections.

Career & Background

Kay O'Neill began their artistic career as a self-taught creator, initially building an online following by publishing webcomics on Tumblr under the pseudonym StrangelyKatie. One of their early popular webcomics, Princess Princess, gained significant visibility before being published in print by Oni Press as Princess Princess Ever After. O'Neill noted the distinct accessibility and reach that physical books offer, particularly when placed within easy reach of young readers in school and public libraries.

Following their debut print release, O'Neill authored and illustrated several original graphic novels with Oni Press, earning multiple honors including Eisner and Harvey Awards. In December 2020, O'Neill shared that they use they/them pronouns and prefer to be called Kay, having previously published under the names Katie O'Neill and K. O'Neill.

Writing Style & Themes

O'Neill's storytelling is characterized by gentle fantasy narratives that mix slice-of-life elements with accessible, comforting world-building. Recurring motifs across their graphic novels include tea culture, fictional creatures, environmental awareness, traditional crafts, and the quiet magic found in daily routines. Rather than relying on high-stakes conflict or violence, their plots prioritize emotional well-being, interpersonal care, heritage, and personal growth.

Inclusion and diverse representation are central to O'Neill's work. Their debut graphic novel featured an early depiction of a fairy-tale romance between two princesses who rescue each other, helping expand LGBTQ+ representation in children's graphic literature. Visually, O'Neill utilizes soft color palettes, charming character designs, and expressive depictions of nature that reinforce the welcoming atmosphere of their books.
