Kay O'Neill began their artistic career as a self-taught creator, initially building an online following by publishing webcomics on Tumblr under the pseudonym StrangelyKatie. One of their early popular webcomics, Princess Princess, gained significant visibility before being published in print by Oni Press as Princess Princess Ever After. O'Neill noted the distinct accessibility and reach that physical books offer, particularly when placed within easy reach of young readers in school and public libraries.
Following their debut print release, O'Neill authored and illustrated several original graphic novels with Oni Press, earning multiple honors including Eisner and Harvey Awards.
