The Sun and Her Flowers,

The development of contemporary short-form, illustrated poetry reached a broad global readership through self-published collection releases that blended spare verse with minimal line drawings. Rupi Kaur established herself within this genre by combining personal reflection, visual illustration, and spoken-word performance. Her landmark debut collection Milk and Honey alongside her follow-up book The Sun and Her Flowers transformed contemporary poetry publishing by reaching millions of readers outside traditional literary channels.

By addressing themes of trauma, migration, healing, love, and womanhood, Kaur's work bridges spoken performance traditions with accessible written texts. Her collections feature lower-case typography and direct aesthetic design, creating an intimate reading experience that encourages self-reflection and creative expression.

Career & Background

Born in Punjab, India, in 1992, Kaur immigrated to Canada with her family during early childhood and grew up in the Toronto area. Encouraged by her mother to express herself through art from a young age, she began drawing at age five and started performing spoken-word poetry in 2009. She later studied rhetoric and professional writing at the University of Waterloo, where she compiled and illustrated her original poems.

In 2014, at twenty-one years old, Kaur self-published Milk and Honey, which quickly gained widespread popularity before being picked up by major publishers and spending over a year on international bestseller lists. She followed this success with The Sun and Her Flowers in 2017 and Home Body in 2020, both debuting at the top of bestseller lists globally. Expanding into guided writing and performance production, she released Healing Through Words in 2022 and self-produced the performance film Rupi Kaur Live.

Writing Style & Themes

Kaur's writing style is defined by brief, uncapitalized poems accompanied by simple black-and-white line drawings that she creates herself. Drawing on her academic background in rhetoric studies and her experience as a spoken-word performer, her pieces prioritize emotional clarity, concise language, and rhythmic cadence. Her poetry frequently explores themes of physical and emotional trauma, abusive relationships, family history, the Punjabi diaspora experience, self-love, and personal growth.
