Career & Background
Born in Punjab, India, in 1992, Kaur immigrated to Canada with her family during early childhood and grew up in the Toronto area. Encouraged by her mother to express herself through art from a young age, she began drawing at age five and started performing spoken-word poetry in 2009. She later studied rhetoric and professional writing at the University of Waterloo, where she compiled and illustrated her original poems.
In 2014, at twenty-one years old, Kaur self-published Milk and Honey, which quickly gained widespread popularity before being picked up by major publishers and spending over a year on international bestseller lists. She followed this success with The Sun and Her Flowers in 2017 and Home Body in 2020, both debuting at the top of bestseller lists globally. Expanding into guided writing and performance production, she released Healing Through Words in 2022 and self-produced the performance film Rupi Kaur Live.
