He began his professional writing career in 1991 as a film critic and general columnist for the Fresno Bee newspaper, where his reviews and columns were nationally syndicated. In 1996, he moved to Washington, D.C., to work as an in-house editor for America Online (AOL). By 1998, he transitioned into full-time freelance writing and launched his popular blog, Whatever, which earned him the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer in 2008. Beyond fiction and journalism, he has worked as a consultant on writing, editing, and marketing for major corporate clients including The Walt Disney Company, AOL, Oppenheimer Funds, US Trust, Zagat, and Network Solutions. Scalzi also served as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
Scalzi's contributions extend across multimedia, television, and gaming. He served as a creative consultant for the television series Stargate Universe, wrote a long-running science fiction film column for FilmCritic.com, and authored the story for the video game Midnight Star alongside its companion graphic novel Midnight Rises.
