Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases—a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.
It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice—with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan—from foreplay to more-than-missionary position...
Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but to crave all the other things he's making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic...

Contemporary romance novels centering neurodivergent protagonists and emotional authenticity brought a fresh perspective to romantic fiction, most notably through the breakout success of The Kiss Quotient. Author Helen Hoang created a distinct space in the genre by writing love stories that explore autism spectrum experiences, intimate relationships, and personal identity with honesty and nuance.
Born in 1982 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Hoang developed a passion for romance fiction during middle school, saving her lunch money in eighth grade to buy her first romance novel. She went on to graduate from Cornell University before relocating to Southern California. For years, she struggled with social interactions without understanding why, finding emotional resonance and comfort in reading romantic novels.
In 2016, while her daughter was undergoing developmental evaluation, Hoang was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (previously Asperger's Syndrome). This personal diagnosis provided clarity about her own life experiences and directly inspired her debut novel, The Kiss Quotient. Published in June 2018, the book offers a gender-swapped homage to Pretty Woman, following an autistic econometrician who hires an escort to gain confidence in dating. The bestselling book established Hoang as a prominent voice in contemporary romance. She currently resides in San Diego, California, with her husband, two children, and pets.
Hoang's writing is characterized by its candid depiction of neurodiversity, emotional vulnerability, and romantic intimacy. By placing autistic characters at the center of conventional romance tropes, her work challenges stereotypes about neurodivergent individuals and relationships, demonstrating that autistic people can navigate romantic partnerships and secure happy endings.
Her narratives balance humor, sensory detail, and deep internal character development while confronting complex real-world issues. Throughout her trilogy, she explores themes of caregiver burnout, familial pressure, social masking, and grief, using character-driven storytelling to examine how personal healing and self-acceptance intersect with romantic love.
