Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Contemporary young adult literature was fundamentally reshaped by stories confronting systemic racism and police violence through authentic adolescent perspectives. Author Angie Thomas gained international recognition with her debut novel, The Hate U Give, which spent months atop bestseller lists and became a critical touchstone for young readers navigating real-world social crisis.

From her groundbreaking young adult fiction set in the fictional neighborhood of Garden Heights to her foray into middle-grade fantasy, Thomas crafts stories grounded in hip-hop culture, community resilience, and youth empowerment.

Career & Background

Born Angela Thomas on September 20, 1988, in Jackson, Mississippi, she grew up in an economically depressed neighborhood where she was exposed to gun violence at an early age. She found creative expression through hip-hop, performing as a teen rapper and earning an early media feature in Right-On Magazine. She pursued formal literary training at Belhaven University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing.

Her writing career took a major step forward when she received the inaugural Walter Dean Myers Grant awarded by We Need Diverse Books. This support helped launch her debut novel, The Hate U Give, published in 2017. The book became a bestseller and was adapted into a major motion picture from Fox 2000, starring Amandla Stenberg and directed by George Tillman, Jr. Her follow-up novel, On the Come Up, released in 2019, also achieved bestseller status and was adapted into a Paramount film directed by Sanaa Lathan, with Thomas contributing as a producer.

Thomas expanded her bibliography with Find Your Voice: A Guided Journal for Writing Your Truth in 2020 and returned to the setting of her debut with the 2021 prequel Concrete Rose. Branching into new formats and genres, she coauthored the collaborative novels Blackout, Whiteout, and Breakout, and launched her middle-grade fantasy series, Nic Blake and the Remarkables. She divides her time between her native Mississippi and Atlanta.

Writing Style & Themes

Thomas's work frequently explores themes of systemic injustice, media narrative manipulation, grief, and the struggle to find one's voice amid adversity. Drawing on her background in hip-hop, her narratives incorporate rhythmic dialogue, pop culture references, and personal coming-of-age arcs. By presenting complex sociopolitical issues through relatable teenage protagonists, she provides readers with nuanced explorations of code-switching, family bonds, and political activism.
