The revolutionary literary vision that sowed the seeds of Objectivism, Ayn Rand's groundbreaking philosophy, and brought her immediate worldwide acclaim.
This modern classic is the story of intransigent young architect Howard Roark, whose integrity was as unyielding as granite...of Dominique Francon, the exquisitely beautiful woman who loved Roark passionately, but married his worst enemy...and of the fanatic denunciation unleashed by an enraged society against a great creator. As fresh today as it was then, Rand’s provocative novel presents one of the most challenging ideas in all of fiction—that man’s ego is the fountainhead of human progress...
“A writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly...This is the only novel of ideas written by an American woman that I can recall.”—The New York Times

Public policy analysis, security research, applied microeconomics, and social science studies constitute the substantial body of published work associated with research institutions and policy scholars. RAND brings together senior researchers, economists, political scientists, and behavioral scientists to address complex global and domestic challenges across multiple policy domains. Catalog offerings represent this policy literature alongside works such as The fountainhead.
Scholars affiliated with RAND conduct research across diverse policy sectors while serving as faculty at the RAND School of Public Policy and other academic institutions. Senior political scientist Pauline Moore researches security cooperation, irregular warfare, terrorism, and K-12 school safety, having co-authored The Politics of Terror with Erica Chenoweth in 2018. Senior behavioral and social scientist Wendy M. Troxel, a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral sleep medicine and author of Sharing the Covers: Every Couple's Guide to Better Sleep, holds adjunct professorships at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Utah. Senior economist Rosanna Smart codirects both the RAND Drug Policy Research Center and the RAND Gun Policy in America initiative, focusing on applied microeconomics, health behaviors, and illegal markets.
Additional senior researchers oversee major policy areas and specialized centers within the institution. Anita Chandra holds the RAND distinguished chair in American social policy and previously served as vice president of RAND Social and Economic Well-Being. Robert J. Lempert directs the Frederick S. Pardee Center for Longer Range Global Policy and the Future Human Condition, focusing on risk management. Economist Kandice A. Kapinos, former director of the Center for Causal Inference, examines healthcare access and disparities in the United States. Senior economist Lynn A. Karoly investigates human capital investments, labor markets, and early childhood care and education programs, while senior policy researcher Stephani L. Wrabel evaluates standards-based school accountability and military education programs.
The publications produced by RAND authors rely on empirical modeling, econometric methods, and causal inference tools to analyze social, environmental, and structural drivers of public outcomes. Researchers integrate applied microeconomics with epidemiologic models to assess healthcare policy, drug markets, and violence determinants. Analytical frameworks frequently address decisionmaking under conditions of deep uncertainty and measure the implementation of complex institutional systems.
Key thematic areas include international security, counterterrorism, health equity, public education, and social welfare infrastructure. Research topics extend from defense policy and national security education to personal health behaviors, including couple sleep dynamics and early childhood workforce development.
