§Synopsis

01

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

Young adult dystopian fiction and mythic fantasy received a defining series with the publication of The Darkest Minds, a narrative following teenagers with dangerous powers in a collapse-riddled America. Author Alexandra Bracken reached international audiences through this multi-volume saga, which was later adapted into a feature film, and went on to author multiple #1 New York Times bestselling novels translated into more than 20 languages.

Career & Background

Born on February 27, 1987, in Phoenix, Arizona, Alexandra Bracken grew up immersed in pop culture as the daughter of a Star Wars collector. Attending an endless sequence of Star Wars conventions and toy fairs during her childhood ignited her imagination and fostered an early devotion to reading. After graduating from Chaparral High School, she attended The College of William & Mary in Virginia, double majoring in English and History. As a college senior, she sold her debut fantasy novel, Brightly Woven, which was published in 2010.

Following graduation, Bracken relocated to New York City to work in children's book publishing, spending six years building her career first as an editorial assistant and later in marketing. This industry background provided her with insight into book production and promotion while she continued writing her own fiction. After six years balancing publishing work with writing, she chose to write full-time. She eventually returned to her home state of Arizona, where she lives with her dog, Tennyson, in a home filled with books.

Writing Style & Themes

Bracken's narrative work frequently combines elements of high-stakes fantasy, time travel, and mythology with grounded emotional arcs. Drawing on her academic background in history, her world-building often integrates historical settings and reimagined legends alongside speculative constructs. Her stories emphasize themes of agency, survival, loyalty, and the complex burdens borne by young protagonists forced into positions of leadership.

  • Lore — A #1 New York Times bestselling fantasy novel set in modern-day New York City that reimagines Greek mythology around a deadly competition where gods are hunted for their powers.
