The high-stakes fantasy world where gods are birthed by human desires and hunted by professional mercenaries introduced a fresh dynamic to epic fantasy with the launch of the Fallen Gods trilogy. English fantasy author Hannah Kaner gained widespread acclaim through her debut novel Godkiller, constructing a landscape where mortals struggle against rogue deities, divine pacts, and political intrigue.
Raised in Northumberland, Kaner attended the King Edward VI School in Morpeth before completing a first-class degree in English at Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 2014. She subsequently earned a Master of Science with distinction from the University of Edinburgh. Alongside her literary career, Kaner has worked as a senior digital consultant in Edinburgh, delivering digital healthcare tools and public services. Her writing career expanded rapidly following the publication of Godkiller, leading to translations of her work into fifteen languages and nominations for major honors, including the Hugo, Locus, British Fantasy, and British Book Awards.
Kaner draws inspiration from world mythologies, speculative fiction, and complex character dynamics, frequently centering her narratives on themes of resilience, faith, and mortal survival against overwhelming forces. Her storytelling emphasizes nuanced representation, exploring characters navigating disability, chronic illness, and mental health within high-fantasy settings. By combining gritty action with morally complex character arcs, her prose examines the personal costs of conflict and the narratives people craft to make sense of human existence.
