In Alison Bechdel’s hilariously skewering and gloriously cast new comic novel confection, a cartoonist named Alison Bechdel, running a pygmy goat sanctuary in Vermont, is existentially irked by a climate-challenged world and a citizenry on the brink of civil war. She wonders: Can she pull humanity out of its death spiral by writing a scathingly self-critical memoir about her own greed and privilege?
Meanwhile, Alison’s first graphic memoir about growing up with her father, a taxidermist who specialized in replicas of Victorian animal displays, has been adapted into a highly successful TV series. It’s a phenomenon that makes Alison, formerly on the cultural margins, the envy of her friend group (recognizable as characters, now middle-aged and living communally in Vermont, from Bechdel’s beloved comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For).
As the TV show Death and Taxidermy racks up Emmy after Emmy—and when Alison’s Pauline Bunyanesque partner Holly posts an instructional wood-chopping video that goes viral—Alison’s own envy spirals. Why couldn’t she be the writer for a critically lauded and wildly popular reality TV show…like Queer Eye...showing people how to free themselves from consumer capitalism and live a more ethical life?!!
Spent’s rollicking and masterful denouement—making the case for seizing what’s true about life in the world at this moment, before it’s too late—once again proves that “nobody does it better” (New York Times Book Review) than the real Alison Bechdel.

Long-running comic strips and graphic memoirs examining queer identity, family history, and contemporary social tensions have established a prominent place in American graphic literature. Alison Bechdel entered national prominence through her self-syndicated comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, which chronicled lesbian counterculture for twenty-five years and originated the widely referenced Bechdel test. She achieved major critical and commercial recognition with Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, a tragicomic memoir exploring her relationship with her late father, closeted sexuality, and literary themes.
Born on September 10, 1960, in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, Bechdel graduated from Oberlin College in 1981 with a degree in Studio Art and Art History. She began self-syndicating Dykes to Watch Out For in 1983, running the strip through 2008 and compiling eleven collected volumes that documented queer community life over a quarter-century. In 2006, she published Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, which was named the Best Book of 2006 by Time magazine and was later adapted into a 2015 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical.
Following the success of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Bechdel continued exploring autobiographical and narrative themes in Are You My Mother? (2012) and The Secret to Superhuman Strength (2021), alongside her 2025 graphic novel Spent: A Comic Novel. Her contributions to literature and comics earned her a MacArthur Fellowship in 2014, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an appointment as Cartoonist Laureate of Vermont. She has also served as a Professor in the Practice of English and Film & Media Studies at Yale University.
Bechdel's work is characterized by the intersection of personal narrative and broader social and political commentary. Her graphic memoirs frequently blend meticulous archival drawings, literary references, and personal recollection to investigate family secrets, gender, sexuality, and psychological interiority. In Spent: A Comic Novel, she addresses the tension between artistic creation and political anxiety, examining how personal lives intersect with broader cultural shifts and consumer culture.
