Semiosis,

Exploring first contact, plant intelligence, and ecological survival, speculative fiction gained a distinct voice with the publication of the acclaimed science fiction novel Semiosis. Written by American author Sue Burke, the novel introduces human colonists attempting to survive on Pax, an alien planet where sentient plant life dominates the ecosystem and forces human settlers into complex symbiotic relationships.

Career & Background

Born Susan Carol Burke on June 21, 1955, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Burke began her writing career as a teenage newspaper reporter before studying at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. She worked for many years as a journalist, reporter, and editor while publishing poetry and short fiction, eventually attending the Clarion Writers' Workshop. In December 1999, she moved to Madrid, Spain, with her husband, spending seventeen years working as a translator and freelance writer. She returned to the United States in July 2016 to settle in Chicago, continuing her work translating Spanish science fiction into English.

Writing Style & Themes

Burke's fiction is widely recognized for its rigorous speculative biology, detailed world-building, and thoughtful examination of non-human intelligence and communication. Drawing on her extensive background as a translator and journalist, her stories explore language barriers, ecological diplomacy, and the necessity of adapting to non-human perspectives. Beyond her novels, she has published over thirty short stories in prominent science fiction publications such as Asimov's Science Fiction and Clarkesworld, alongside her translations of Spanish speculative works.
