Career & Background

Born Susan Carol Burke on June 21, 1955, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Burke began her writing career as a teenage newspaper reporter before studying at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. She worked for many years as a journalist, reporter, and editor while publishing poetry and short fiction, eventually attending the Clarion Writers' Workshop. In December 1999, she moved to Madrid, Spain, with her husband, spending seventeen years working as a translator and freelance writer. She returned to the United States in July 2016 to settle in Chicago, continuing her work translating Spanish science fiction into English.
