For many years Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won't stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that treacherous world - and face the power of her own extraordinary destiny.

Highlighting speculative fiction, necromancy, and rich world-building in young adult fantasy, the Old Kingdom series established a distinct approach to magic where free magic and Charter magic exist in delicate balance. Australian author Garth Nix created this immersive setting, introducing readers to dangerous dead entities, bells used as instruments of necromancy, and brave practitioners designated to keep the boundary between life and death secure.
Born in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1963, Garth Nix grew up in Canberra before embarking on a journey across Europe writing short stories. He served as a part-time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve for several years and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing from the University of Canberra in 1986. Before pursuing writing full-time, he gained extensive experience across the book trade as a bookseller, publisher's sales representative, publicist, and editor. His published work began with the 1984 short story Sam, Cars and the Cuckoo, followed by his debut fantasy novel The Ragwitch in 1990.
Nix's fiction features structured systems of magic that contrast wild elemental forces against ordered rules, paired with high-stakes martial conflict and deep lore. His stories frequently center on young protagonists thrust into heavy responsibilities, navigating duty, survival, and moral choices during systemic crises. Drawing on his background in writing and publishing as well as his military reserve service, his work integrates detailed tactical pacing with mythic structures and balance between life and death.
