§About the Author

Eiichiro Oda

2 books in catalog

The high-seas adventure series One Piece reimagined shonen manga through expansive world-building, intricate character arcs, and an interconnected story spanning decades. Japanese manga artist Eiichiro Oda created the record-breaking epic, which follows Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates as they search for the ultimate treasure across vast ocean realms.

Career & Background

Born on January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto, Japan, Oda decided to become a manga artist at age four to avoid taking a conventional job. As a child, he practiced drawing by sketching characters from Fujiko Fujio and drew creative inspiration from Akira Toriyama's works as well as the animated series Vicky the Viking, which sparked his fascination with pirate folklore. During his youth, Oda submitted a character design named Pandaman to Yudetamago's wrestling manga Kinnikuman; the character appeared in a published chapter and later became a recurring hidden cameo throughout Oda's own career. At age 17, Oda submitted his short story Wanted! to Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump, winning early awards before working as an assistant to manga creators Shinobu Kaitani, Masaya Tokuhiro, and Nobuhiro Watsuki, assisting Watsuki on Rurouni Kenshin.

In 1997, Oda began serializing One Piece in Weekly Shonen Jump, starting with the narrative foundational volume One Piece, Vol. 1: Romance Dawn. The series grew into a long-running global phenomenon with more than 100 volumes, including One Piece, Vol. 108, surpassing 500 million copies in circulation to become the best-selling manga in history. Beyond drawing the weekly manga, Oda interacts with readers through fan Q&A columns called SBS and serves as an executive producer and consultant on major adaptations, including the anime adaptation and the live-action Netflix series.

Writing Style & Themes

Oda's narrative approach relies on meticulously planned long-term lore, dramatic emotional beats, whimsical humor, and expressive visual character designs. His storylines consistently examine core themes of personal freedom, allegiance among crewmates, structural corruption, and the enduring pursuit of dreams. Oda's artwork is noted for its dynamic kinetic action, densely detailed splash pages, and hidden visual gags like recurring background appearances of Pandaman.
