An ambitious mother puts her art career on hold to stay at home with her newborn son, but the experience does not match her imagination. Two years later, she steps into the bathroom for a break from her toddler's demands, only to discover a dense patch of hair on the back of her neck. In the mirror, her canines suddenly look sharper than she remembers. Her husband, who travels for work five days a week, casually dismisses her fears from faraway hotel rooms.
As the mother's symptoms intensify, and her temptation to give in to her new dog impulses peak, she struggles to keep her alter-canine-identity secret. Seeking a cure at the library, she discovers the mysterious academic tome which becomes her bible, A Field Guide to Magical Women: A Mythical Ethnography, and meets a group of mommies involved in a multilevel-marketing scheme who may also be more than what they seem.
An outrageously original novel of ideas about art, power, and womanhood wrapped in a satirical fairy tale, Nightbitch will make you want to howl in laughter and recognition. And you should. You should howl as much as you want.

Contemporary fiction exploring domestic pressure, body horror, and absurd transformations reached a wider audience with the publication of the 2021 debut novel Nightbitch. Author Rachel Yoder examines the visceral strain of early motherhood through a story about a stay-at-home mother who believes she is turning into a dog. The book was recognized as a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Fiction, selected as an Indie Next Pick, and named one of the year's best books by publications including Esquire and Vulture.
Beyond her debut novel, Yoder's career encompasses fiction, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, and literary editing. Her prose has appeared in leading periodicals such as Harper's, The Paris Review, The New York Times, The Southern Review, and The Sun, while her editing and teaching projects focus on the mechanics and iterative nature of the creative process.
Yoder grew up in an intentional Mennonite community located in the Appalachian foothills of eastern Ohio. She completed her undergraduate studies at Georgetown University before pursuing graduate work in creative writing. She earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program as well as an MFA in fiction from the University of Arizona.
Alongside writer Mark Polanzak, Yoder co-founded draft: the journal of process, a literary publication highlighting early and final drafts of stories, essays, and poems alongside interviews on artistic development. She also hosted The Fail Safe, a podcast exploring how authors navigate creative setbacks. After serving as the 2023–2024 Trias Writer-in-Residence at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, she joined the faculty at the University of Iowa as an Assistant Professor of Screenwriting. She resides in Iowa City with her husband and son.
Yoder's work frequently blends surrealist elements, body horror, and dark satire to investigate identity, maternal isolation, and artistic agency. Her narratives examine the intense physical and emotional anxieties surrounding domestic life, using bodily transformations and psychological strain to question societal expectations placed on caregivers and creators.
Technically, Yoder's prose balances grounded, intimate detail with bizarre, fable-like premises. Her short fiction and essays have earned recognition including The Editors' Prize in Fiction from The Missouri Review and notable distinctions in both Best American Short Stories and Best American Nonrequired Reading.
