§About the Author

Marjorie M. Liu

14 books in catalog

Combining matriarchal dark fantasy, steampunk aesthetics, and psychic magic, the epic comic series Monstress presents an alternate early-twentieth-century Asia marked by war and internal turmoil. Author Marjorie M. Liu created this acclaimed series alongside artist Sana Takeda for Image Comics, earning multiple Hugo, Eisner, British Fantasy, and Harvey awards. Her narrative work spans creator-owned graphic novels, major superhero titles, and paranormal fantasy fiction.

Career & Background

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Marjorie M. Liu pursued higher education at Lawrence University before earning a Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin. After completing a legal internship and publishing early poetry and short fiction, she transitioned from practicing law to full-time writing, releasing her debut novel Tiger Eye in 2005. Her literary prose expanded through paranormal romance and urban fantasy series such as The Hunter Kiss, alongside contributions to Marvel Comics titles including NYX, X-23, Dark Wolverine, Black Widow, Han Solo, and Astonishing X-Men. Her run on Astonishing X-Men earned a GLAAD Media Award nomination for its representation of LGBTQ characters. In 2018, Liu achieved historical recognition when she became the first woman in the thirty-year history of the Eisner Awards to win in the Best Writer category for Monstress.

Writing Style & Themes

Liu's writing frequently examines complex psychological landscapes, balancing high-stakes external conflict with internal trauma, identity, and personal survival. Set against intricate worldbuilding influenced by matriarchal structures, shapechangers, and folklore, her stories explore themes of war, power, family secrets, and systemic oppression. Whether developing original graphic narratives or expanding established superhero franchises, her prose combines dark fantasy elements with nuanced character relationships and emotionally grounded conflicts.
