Sold into indentured servitude at the exotic Night Court as a child, Phèdre nó Delaunay, faces a difficult choice between honor and duty as she deals with a world of glittering luxury, conspiracy, sacrifice, and betrayal and plays a key role in protecting her land from a dangerously clever and evil villainess.
This is a political-intrigue fantasy first and an erotic novel second, though plenty of readers will tell you the order flips depending on the chapter. Carey builds Terre d'Ange, an alternate medieval Europe, on a single creed, 'Love as thou wilt', and then makes her narrator's masochism a religious calling rather than a gimmick. That choice is why one reviewer finds the explicit scenes thematic instead of gratuitous. Kirkus called it a remarkable, deeply satisfying debut, and warned off the squeamish and the judgmental.
The cost is real. The opening, Phèdre's childhood, is slow, ornate and heavy on exposition, and her memoir-like first-person voice is either the book's glory or its main irritation. Readers who love the prose are the ones who forgive the start. If the sexual content is going to stop you, the dense, punishing first 300 pages will probably do it.
Kirkus loved this richly textured debut, and the 2002 Locus Award for Best First Novel backs up the praise. Later readers mostly agree the prose and politics are excellent. They split on whether the sexual content serves the story or swamps it.

Richly detailed historical fantasy and intricate worldbuilding define the fiction that brought widespread acclaim to the subgenre of epic political intrigue. Author Jacqueline Carey established herself in speculative literature with her debut novel Kushiel's Dart, which won the 2002 Locus Award for Best First Novel and launched the sprawling Kushiel's Legacy series.
Jacqueline A. Carey was born on October 9, 1964, in Highland Park, Illinois. She attended Lake Forest College in the northern suburbs of Chicago, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in psychology and English literature in 1986. During her college years, she spent six months studying abroad and working at a bookstore in London, England. Following graduation, she worked at a college art center while developing her creative writing, contributing short fiction and essays to regional collections and publications.
Carey currently lives in West Michigan, where she is a member of the state's oldest Mardi Gras krewe. Beyond her novel writing, her creative life is shaped by extensive research into arcane historical topics, photography, gardening, cooking, and travel to international destinations including Iceland, Finland, China, and Egypt.
Carey's fantasy writing is distinguished by its blend of complex court politics, alternative history, sensory prose, and thoughtful explorations of theology, ethics, and human desire. Her work frequently reinterprets historical mythology and legendary traditions through rich worldbuilding and intricate diplomatic conflict. In addition to high fantasy, Carey's bibliography includes urban fantasy exploring local Michigan folklore and supernatural liaisons, as well as literary adaptations of classic drama.
