Jacqueline A. Carey was born on October 9, 1964, in Highland Park, Illinois. She attended Lake Forest College in the northern suburbs of Chicago, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in psychology and English literature in 1986. During her college years, she spent six months studying abroad and working at a bookstore in London, England. Following graduation, she worked at a college art center while developing her creative writing, contributing short fiction and essays to regional collections and publications.

Carey currently lives in West Michigan, where she is a member of the state's oldest Mardi Gras krewe. Beyond her novel writing, her creative life is shaped by extensive research into arcane historical topics, photography, gardening, cooking, and travel to international destinations including Iceland, Finland, China, and Egypt.
