Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 1: Ryomen Sukuna,

Dark supernatural fantasy and fast-paced martial action define the dark fantasy manga series Jujutsu Kaisen, a narrative centered on high school students battling deadly curses born from human malice and negative emotions. Pen-named artist Gege Akutami introduced this world of sorcery, bound vows, and supernatural warfare to readers in 2018 through Weekly Shonen Jump. The storyline gained immense worldwide attention, expanding into a blockbuster anime adaptation and film releases that established the series as one of the most prominent modern shonen franchises.

Career & Background

Born on February 26, 1992, in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, Akutami later moved to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture during fifth grade. Inspired after copying a friend's drawings and reading Tite Kubo's manga series Bleach in fourth grade, Akutami pursued a career in the manga industry. At age twenty-two, Akutami worked as an assistant to artist Yasuhiro Kano on Kiss x Death before releasing early one-shot stories, beginning with "Kamishiro Sosa" in Jump NEXT! in 2014 and "No. 9" in 2015.

In 2017, Akutami published a four-chapter mini-series titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School in Jump GIGA, which served as the prototype narrative for cursed energy combat. Following enthusiastic reader reception, this short work was later collected as Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and served as the direct prequel to the flagship series. Jujutsu Kaisen officially began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018 and ran through 2024, maintaining strict public anonymity throughout its multi-year run.

Writing Style & Themes

Akutami's storytelling is characterized by complex tactical power systems, visceral fight choreography, and moral ambiguity where neither sorcerers nor curses enjoy complete plot safety. Drawing influence from classic action titles while subverting typical hero tropes, Akutami crafts high-stakes encounters governed by strict internal rules such as cursed energy constraints and domain expansions. Major story arcs showcase intricate strategy and severe consequences, emphasizing themes of unavoidable death, systemic corruption within sorcery society, and the burdensome responsibility placed upon young sorcerers.
