Career & Background

Born on February 26, 1992, in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, Akutami later moved to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture during fifth grade. Inspired after copying a friend's drawings and reading Tite Kubo's manga series Bleach in fourth grade, Akutami pursued a career in the manga industry. At age twenty-two, Akutami worked as an assistant to artist Yasuhiro Kano on Kiss x Death before releasing early one-shot stories, beginning with "Kamishiro Sosa" in Jump NEXT! in 2014 and "No. 9" in 2015.

In 2017, Akutami published a four-chapter mini-series titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School in Jump GIGA, which served as the prototype narrative for cursed energy combat. Following enthusiastic reader reception, this short work was later collected as Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and served as the direct prequel to the flagship series. Jujutsu Kaisen officially began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018 and ran through 2024, maintaining strict public anonymity throughout its multi-year run.
