Blending post-apocalyptic suspense with speculative horror, the 2014 novel The Girl with All the Gifts sold over a million copies and established a major presence in modern science fiction and dark fantasy. British author M.R. Carey, who also writes under his birth name Mike Carey, adapted the story into a 2016 feature film screenplay that earned a BAFTA Award nomination.
Born in Liverpool, England, in 1959, Michael R. Carey studied English at St. Peter's College, Oxford, and worked as a teacher for fifteen years before becoming a full-time writer. He began his career in comic books during the 1990s, gaining broad recognition for his work with DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. There he penned the long-running The Sandman spin-off series Lucifer from 1999 to 2006 and completed a three-year stint writing Hellblazer. Carey also created independent comic series for Vertigo, including Crossing Midnight and the Hugo Award-finalist The Unwritten with artist Peter Gross, which regularly appeared on the New York Times graphic fiction bestseller list. Expanding into mainstream superhero comics, he wrote lengthy runs for Marvel Comics titles such as X-Men and Fantastic Four, alongside video game writing for X-Men: Destiny.
Transitioning into prose fiction and screenwriting, Carey published the urban fantasy Felix Castor series as Mike Carey before achieving widespread novelistic success as M.R. Carey. In addition to screenplays and radio plays, his speculative fiction expanded to include multiversal science fiction in the Pandominion series, which launched with Infinity Gate and continued in Echo of Worlds. His dark fantasy output also includes co-writing the Bram Stoker Award finalist Darkness Visible with Arvind Ethan David.
Carey's narratives frequently blur the boundaries between speculative genres, combining rigorous world-building with deep character studies and psychological tension. Across comic books, feature films, and prose novels, his work explores themes of identity, moral ambiguity, survival, and complex mythological or scientific systems. Whether crafting cosmic multiverses, supernatural urban landscapes, or biologically grounded post-apocalyptic futures, Carey focuses on human vulnerability and resilience when confronted by overwhelming forces.
