§Synopsis

01

Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar are trying to get back to normal—they may have saved Crescent City, but with so much upheaval in their lives lately, they mostly want a chance to relax. Slow down. Figure out what the future holds.

The Asteri have kept their word so far, leaving Bryce and Hunt alone. But with the rebels chipping away at the Asteri’s power, the threat the rulers pose is growing. As Bryce, Hunt, and their friends get pulled into the rebels’ plans, the choice becomes clear: stay silent while others are oppressed or fight for what’s right. And they’ve never been very good at staying silent.

In this sexy, action-packed sequel to the #1 bestseller House of Earth and Blood, Sarah J. Maas weaves a captivating story of a world about to explode—and the people who will do anything to save it.

§Our take

This is the middle-child book, and it behaves like one. It has to follow a beloved opener and set up what comes next, so it spends a long first third on domestic scenes, politics and a hunt for a missing boy. Some readers call that patient groundwork. Others call it padding, and one publicly asked for a firmer editor.

Then the book speeds up, and the final stretch is what people remember. Reviewers single it out as worth the wait. Kirkus found the whole thing absorbing but unprofound, and said the big cast and the barrage of twists wear thin at this length. Fair. Still, the romance between the leads deepens, the world widens past one city, and the ending is the part readers talk about most.

§Themes

Silence or resistance
Bryce and Hunt wanted an ordinary life, and the book asks whether anyone gets one while others are oppressed.
A bigger map
Book one stayed in a single city. This one reaches other lineages and far-flung places and raises the stakes against the Asteri.
Normal, interrupted
Bryce and Hunt try to take a breath; the book promptly refuses to let them.
Long-range plans
Reviewers read the ending as part of a deliberate, long-term design for the author's wider body of work.

§How it was received

Kirkus kept its enthusiasm on a short leash, calling it absorbing plot-driven escapism with soap-opera energy. Several bloggers rank it below book one, though they say the closing stretch is worth the wait. Readers gave it the 2022 Goodreads Choice Award in Fantasy.

§Read it if

  • You loved House of Earth and Blood and want more of Bryce and Hunt, with chemistry that deepens
  • You know the author's earlier fantasy series and like the idea of a payoff that rewards long-term readers
  • You like twist-heavy escapism and don't mind patience before it pays off

§Skip it if

  • You haven't read book one. This volume leans hard on its events and characters.
  • A very long book with a slow, repetitive first third sounds like a chore

§Before you start

Reading experience
Very long, with a leisurely first third and a fast, twist-heavy final 200 pages.
Reading order
Book 2 of Crescent City, after House of Earth and Blood and before House of Flame and Shadow. Read in order, and have book three ready.
Content notes
Explicit romantic content; one reviewer calls it strictly adults-only because of graphic scenes; Steamy scenes with complicated romantic dynamics, per another review.

§Common questions

Do I need to read House of Earth and Blood first?
Yes. This sequel leans on the first book's events and characters, so start there.
Is there a book three?
Yes. House of Flame and Shadow follows it, and a fourth book is planned with no date yet.
Is it better than the first Crescent City book?
Readers disagree. Some find it more immersive, while several rank it below book one for the slow start and a less emotional ending.
