Dystopian fantasy fiction gained a prominent multi-book narrative with the publication of the YA novel Red Queen, which quickly reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Author Victoria Aveyard established her literary presence through this high-concept story blending monarchical power struggles with superpowered social hierarchies.
Born and raised in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, Victoria Aveyard pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in screenwriting at the University of Southern California, graduating in 2012. Shortly after completing her degree, she pitched an idea for a young adult fantasy novel to a talent management firm in Los Angeles. Between July 2012 and January 2013, she returned to Massachusetts to write the initial draft of Red Queen. Following the commercial success of her debut novel, Sony Pictures partnered with Aveyard to write a spec screenplay titled Eternal. Aveyard later expanded her bibliography with the YA high fantasy Realm Breaker trilogy and currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband and dog.
Informed by her formal education in screenwriting, Victoria Aveyard crafts narrative arcs marked by visual scene construction, rapid cinematic pacing, and structured episodic tension. Her worldbuilding frequently contrasts divided social classes, political intrigue, and rebellion within high-fantasy and dystopian frameworks. Across her speculative fiction, her narratives focus on young protagonists navigating shifting loyalties, complex power structures, and the personal consequences of systemic conflict.
