§Synopsis

01

This is one of Chandler’s most famous crime novels featuring the detective Philip Marlowe, who’s about to give up on a completely routine case when he finds himself in the wrong place at the right time to get caught up in a murder that leads to a ring of jewel thieves, another murder, a fortune-teller, a couple more murders, and more corruption than your average graveyard.

Detective fiction acquired a distinctively atmospheric, hard-boiled voice through crime stories featuring Los Angeles private investigator Philip Marlowe. Raymond Chandler began his novelistic career in middle age, crafting intricately plotted detective stories set against the backdrop of mid-century Southern California vice, oil wealth, and urban corruption. His debut novel, The Big Sleep, introduced Marlowe to readers and established a landmark model for modern noir mystery writing.

Career & Background

Born in Chicago in 1888, Chandler moved to South London with his mother following his parents' separation. He received a classical education at Dulwich College starting in 1900 and later studied international law in France and Germany. After working for the British Civil Service, teaching briefly, and contributing poetry and essays to publications such as The Westminster Gazette and The Academy, he returned to the United States in 1912. He served in the Canadian Army during the First World War and subsequently settled in California, marrying Cissy Pascal in 1924 and working as an auditor and executive for Dabney Oil Syndicate.

When Chandler lost his oil company job during the Great Depression in 1932 at age 44, he turned to writing detective fiction. He published his first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", in Black Mask pulp magazine in 1933. After seven years of writing for pulp publications, he published his first novel, The Big Sleep, in 1939 at age 51. Chandler went on to publish seven complete novels in his lifetime, as well as working as a Hollywood screenwriter. Almost all of his novels were adapted into motion pictures before his death in La Jolla, California, in 1959.

Writing Style & Themes

Chandler's writing combined classical literary training with the sharp, cynical rhythms of American pulp fiction. His narratives focused extensively on the seamier side of Los Angeles, examining how vice and greed reached into every layer of society, from oil tycoons and film industry elites to street-level criminals. Central to his fiction is Philip Marlowe, a cynical yet honorable investigator navigating a corrupt urban landscape.

Rather than relying strictly on puzzle-like plot mechanics, Chandler emphasized mood, vivid imagery, sharp dialogue, and social observation. His work portrayed Southern California as a site where rapid economic growth, civic pretense, and hidden corruption intersected, influencing generations of crime writers and filmmakers.

Major Works

  • The Big Sleep — Published in 1939, this debut novel introduces private detective Philip Marlowe as he is hired by an ailing oil general to solve a blackmail scheme involving his daughter, bringing Marlowe into contact with Los Angeles's criminal underworld.
  • Farewell, My Lovely — Chandler's second novel follows Marlowe as an investigation into a missing woman entangles him in a complex network of police corruption, gambling, and murder.
  • The Long Goodbye — This major novel deepens Marlowe's character through a narrative centered on personal friendship, betrayal, and high-society cover-ups in Southern California.
