But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.
Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.
To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.
The plot is familiar court fantasy. The foundation is what makes it worth your time. Sue Lynn Tan starts from the Chang'e legend, the woman who drinks the elixir and rises to the Moon, and wonders why she would leave her husband. Her answer is personal and family-sized, and the whole book grows from it. Kirkus put it neatly: standard court fantasy, lifted by its Chinese myth and Mid-Autumn Festival roots.
The prose is ornate and sensory: clothes, gardens, music. Fans call it lyrical and immersive. Others find it repetitive. Know which camp you're in before you start, because the book won't change its mind. The romance divides readers too, and so does a heroine who wins quite often.
Kirkus enjoyed the lush magic and fluid prose, though it found the heroine's run of successes nearly frustrating. Fantasy Hive and a bookseller both called it an impressive debut; give the palace opening time, and the story soon picks up speed. One harsher review praised the opening parts but found the ending cliched.
