The Midwestern resort town of Pemkowet boasts a diverse population: eccentric locals, wealthy summer people, and tourists by the busload—not to mention fairies, sprites, vampires, naiads, ogres, and a whole host of eldritch folk, presided over by Hel, a reclusive Norse goddess.
To Daisy Johanssen, fathered by an incubus and raised by a single mother, it’s home. And as Hel’s enforcer and the designated liaison to the Pemkowet Police Department, it’s up to her to ensure relations between the mundane and eldritch communities run smoothly.
But when a young man from a nearby college drowns—and signs point to eldritch involvement—the town’s booming paranormal tourism trade is at stake. Teamed up with her childhood crush, Officer Cody Fairfax, a sexy werewolf on the down-low, Daisy must solve the crime—and keep a tight rein on the darker side of her nature. For if she’s ever tempted to invoke her demonic birthright, it could accidentally unleash nothing less than Armageddon.

Richly detailed historical fantasy and intricate worldbuilding define the fiction that brought widespread acclaim to the subgenre of epic political intrigue. Author Jacqueline Carey established herself in speculative literature with her debut novel Kushiel's Dart, which won the 2002 Locus Award for Best First Novel and launched the sprawling Kushiel's Legacy series.
Jacqueline A. Carey was born on October 9, 1964, in Highland Park, Illinois. She attended Lake Forest College in the northern suburbs of Chicago, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in psychology and English literature in 1986. During her college years, she spent six months studying abroad and working at a bookstore in London, England. Following graduation, she worked at a college art center while developing her creative writing, contributing short fiction and essays to regional collections and publications.
Carey currently lives in West Michigan, where she is a member of the state's oldest Mardi Gras krewe. Beyond her novel writing, her creative life is shaped by extensive research into arcane historical topics, photography, gardening, cooking, and travel to international destinations including Iceland, Finland, China, and Egypt.
Carey's fantasy writing is distinguished by its blend of complex court politics, alternative history, sensory prose, and thoughtful explorations of theology, ethics, and human desire. Her work frequently reinterprets historical mythology and legendary traditions through rich worldbuilding and intricate diplomatic conflict. In addition to high fantasy, Carey's bibliography includes urban fantasy exploring local Michigan folklore and supernatural liaisons, as well as literary adaptations of classic drama.
