§Synopsis

01

"Greta lives with her friend Sabine in an ancient Dutch farmhouse in Hudson, New York. The house, built in 1737, is unrenovated, uninsulated, and full of bees. Greta spends her days transcribing therapy sessions for a sex coach who calls himself Om. She becomes infatuated with his newest client, a repressed married woman she affectionately refers to as Big Swiss, since she's tall, stoic, and originally from Switzerland. Greta is fascinated by Big Swiss's refreshing attitude toward trauma. They both have dark histories, but Big Swiss chooses to remain unattached to her suffering while Greta continues to be tortured by her past. One day, Greta recognizes Big Swiss's voice at the dog park. In a panic, she introduces herself with a fake name and they quickly become enmeshed. Although Big Swiss is unaware of Greta's true identity, Greta has never been more herself with anyone. Her attraction to Big Swiss overrides her guilt, and she'll do anything to sustain the relationship..."--Provided by publisher.

§About the Author

Jen Beagin

1 books in catalog

Contemporary comic fiction often thrives at the intersection of dark satire, emotional vulnerability, and eccentric character studies. Few contemporary novels capture this balance as sharply as the work of Jen Beagin, whose offbeat fiction frequently explores the lives of outsiders, house cleaners, and flawed protagonists navigating unpredictable circumstances, notably featured in her widely acclaimed novel Big Swiss.

Career & Background

Born in Torrance, California, in 1971, Beagin spent parts of her youth in Lowell, Massachusetts. Before establishing her career as a novelist, she worked for years as a house cleaner, an experience that directly informed her early literary projects. In her mid-30s, she returned to higher education, attending the University of Massachusetts Boston before earning a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of California, Irvine.

Her early short stories appeared in literary journals such as Juked and Faultline. Beagin's debut novel, Pretend I'm Dead, earned widespread recognition and was shortlisted for the Center for Fiction's First Novel Prize. In 2017, she received a Whiting Award in fiction. She followed her debut with Vacuum in the Dark, which was shortlisted for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction. She eventually settled in Hudson, New York, where she continues her writing career.

Writing Style & Themes

Beagin's writing is characterized by deadpan humor, candid character voices, and an unsparing exploration of emotional instability and personal recovery. Her narratives frequently depict working-class settings, unconventional living arrangements, and protagonists who navigate past trauma with caustic self-awareness. By integrating surreal comedic situations with grounded emotional realism, her work examines isolation, intimacy, and the absurdities of modern adult life.
