§Synopsis

01

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

§Our take

The world is the draw here, not the love story. The Martial Empire is modelled on ancient Rome, with a cruel military academy and a conquered caste of Scholars at the bottom. Kirkus also heard Arabic traditions in the worldbuilding and counted that a strength.

Two first-person narrators, Laia the spy and Elias the reluctant soldier, trade chapters, and Publishers Weekly credits that alternation for the tension. The trials at Blackcliff are extremely brutal and hard to look away from. The catch is tone: a mild romance sits oddly beside all that cruelty, and Kirkus and a book-club reviewer both flagged how often sexual violence is used as a threat. Prose can run plain and the reluctant-rebel setup is familiar. Still, it moves fast, and plenty of readers couldn't put it down.

§Themes

Living under tyranny
Defiance means death, and Laia's family survives by keeping their heads down until her brother's arrest.
Two sides of one empire
A Scholar girl and a top cadet see the regime from opposite ends, and their loyalties pull at both.
Cruelty as culture
The academy trials, executions and slavery make brutality the system's daily routine.
Resistance and survival
Laia spies for rebels to save her family, and every choice costs something.

§How it was received

Kirkus saw a hit in the making but balked at the plain prose, lazy names and familiar conqueror-and-enslaved romance. Publishers Weekly, more warmly, called it a deft, polished debut. Readers love Laia, Elias and the relentless action, though some find the antagonists thin.

§Read it if

  • You want YA fantasy where the empire matters as much as the romance
  • You like alternating narrators on opposite sides of a conflict
  • You want a contained first book before a four-book series widens out

§Skip it if

  • Graphic violence and a steady drip of cruelty wear on you
  • Sexual violence used as a threat is a dealbreaker, or a mild romance in a brutal world sounds jarring

§Before you start

Reading experience
Fast-moving at roughly 450 to 460 pages, with two alternating narrators and a run of brutal trials that keeps the pace up but isn't comfortable.
Reading order
Book 1 of 4. Next come A Torch Against the Night, A Reaper at the Gates and A Sky Beyond the Storm. Start here: the sequel adds a third narrator and a darker tone.
Content notes
Graphic violence, murder and executions; Extremely brutal military trials; Sexual violence as a threat, plus attempted assault; Slavery and military oppression as central themes.

§Common questions

Is An Ember in the Ashes a series?
Yes. It's the first of four books, followed by A Torch Against the Night, A Reaper at the Gates and A Sky Beyond the Storm.
Is it YA or adult?
It's YA. Kirkus suggests 13 and up, while Publishers Weekly and Penguin Random House say 14 and up, though the violence is heavy.
Is it based on Rome?
Yes. The Martial Empire is modelled on ancient Rome, with Kirkus noting touches of Arabic tradition in the worldbuilding.

§If you liked this

  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins — Publisher materials make the comparison, though one reader says the trials here are far more brutal.
  • A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin — Also cited in publisher promotion. One reviewer says this book wants that gravity but pairs it with a mild romance.

High-stakes worldbuilding and intense character dynamics define the high-fantasy novel An Ember in the Ashes, a bestselling debut that launched an internationally acclaimed young adult fantasy series translated into over thirty-five languages. Sabaa Tahir reached #1 on The New York Times bestseller list with this epic fantasy saga, becoming the first Pakistani-American fantasist to reach the YA list.

Beyond her fantasy writing, her contemporary fiction has earned major literary honors, including the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the Michael L. Printz Award, and the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for her novel All My Rage.

Career & Background

Tahir grew up in California's Mojave Desert, living at her family's eighteen-room motel off the main road in an isolated town. She spent much of her childhood devouring fantasy novels, raiding her brother's comic book stash, and playing guitar badly. She attended UCLA, interning at The Washington Post during her college years, and later worked nights as a newspaper editor at The Washington Post.

It was during her night shifts as a newspaper editor that she began writing An Ember in the Ashes. Becoming a professional author in 2015 following its publication, Tahir expanded the story into a four-book series and published contemporary fiction. Her non-fiction reviews and essays have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Vox. Outside of writing, she enjoys thunderous indie rock, garish socks, and all things nerd.

Writing Style & Themes

Drawing from her background in journalism and her upbringing in a desert motel, Tahir combines fast-paced narrative action with nuanced explorations of trauma, resilience, and personal identity. Her fantasy books portray military empires and systemic oppression, examining the moral choices individuals face under tyranny.

In her contemporary work, she draws on personal history to portray the Pakistani-American immigrant experience, grief, and family ties. Her work has received recognition across major media lists, including spots on TIME Magazine's lists of the 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time and 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time.

It won the 2022 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the Michael L. Printz Award, and the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award.
  • Heir — A young adult fantasy release that expands Tahir's catalog of high-stakes fiction and intricate worldbuilding.
