As the American century draws to an uneasy close, Philip Roth gives us a novel of unqualified greatness that is an elegy for all our century's promises of prosperity, civic order, and domestic bliss. Roth's protagonist is Swede Levov, a legendary athlete at his Newark high school, who grows up in the booming postwar.years to marry a former Miss New Jersey, inherit his father's glove factory, and move into a stone house in the idyllic hamlet of Old Rimrock. And then one day in 1968, Swede's beautiful American luck deserts him.
For Swede's adored daughter, Merry, has grown from a loving, quick- witted girl into a sullen, fanatical teenager—a teenager capable of an outlandishly savage act of political terrorism. And overnight Swede is wrenched out of the longed-for American pastoral and into the indigenous American berserk. Compulsively readable, propelled by sorrow, rage, and a deep compassion for its character.s, this is Roth's masterpiece. --back cover

Exploring American identity, Jewish middle-class life, personal ethics, and mortality, twentieth-century American fiction frequently drew on local setting and autobiography to interrogate culture. Philip Roth became one of the most widely read postwar American novelists through his incisive portrayals of personal turmoil, starting with his acclaimed debut collection Goodbye, Columbus and followed by his bestselling 1969 novel Portnoy's Complaint.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1933 to first-generation Jewish immigrant parents, Roth was raised in a middle-class enclave and graduated from Weequahic High School in 1950. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Bucknell University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, followed by a master's degree in English literature from the University of Chicago. While in Chicago, he met his first wife, Margaret Martinson, and began publishing short fiction and essays in periodicals such as the Chicago Review and The New Yorker. His debut collection, Goodbye, Columbus (1959), won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction and brought him immediate national attention.
Roth's fiction is known for its intensely autobiographical quality, sharp comic dialogue, and formal blurring between reality and fiction. Frequently setting his stories in his hometown of Newark, he examined Jewish-American identity, family duties, sexuality, aging, and the friction between traditional and contemporary morals. He frequently employed literary alter egos, such as Nathan Zuckerman, to explore the complexities of artistic creation and personal memory through a sensual, ingenious prose style.
