During the 1980s, while working as a head writer for a radio drama and comedy company, Pierce adapted an adult fantasy manuscript titled Song into young adult fiction. Encouraged by her literary agent, Claire Smith, and editor Jean Karl at Atheneum Books, she painstakingly revised and retyped the manuscript into a four-volume novel series. She later donated her literary archive to Northern Illinois University and moved to Syracuse, New York, where she lives with her husband.
