Born on December 13, 1954, in South Connellsville, Pennsylvania, Pierce grew up alongside three sisters—Kimberly, Melanie, and Danielle—in a family raised by Jacqueline Sparks and Wayne Franklin Pierce. She earned a full scholarship to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied writing and psychology while selling her first short stories. After completing her university education, she moved to Manhattan to enter the publishing industry, gaining early experience at a New York literary agency.

During the 1980s, while working as a head writer for a radio drama and comedy company, Pierce adapted an adult fantasy manuscript titled Song into young adult fiction. Encouraged by her literary agent, Claire Smith, and editor Jean Karl at Atheneum Books, she painstakingly revised and retyped the manuscript into a four-volume novel series. She later donated her literary archive to Northern Illinois University and moved to Syracuse, New York, where she lives with her husband.
