He left the army in 1959 and briefly taught public school before deciding to pursue writing full-time.
His professional writing career launched in 1963 with the publication of his short story 'Possible to Rue' in Fantastic magazine. He later settled on a tree farm he owned in Florida, maintaining a rigorous daily writing routine that yielded dozens of multi-volume fantasy and science fiction sagas over the next several decades.
