From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes a new novel in her Blood and Ash series…
A Betrayal…
Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.
A Choice….
Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.
A Secret…
But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.
This is the reveal book, and it knows it. The first novel was told from inside a sheltered life, so the sequel's job is to take that life apart, and most of the pleasure is in the explanations and the mythology that come out of it.
The delivery is talk. Poppy asks, characters answer, and one blogger put the exposition at around 40% of the book. Some readers will relish the witty explanations; others will wonder when the romance is going to make room for an actual plot. If banter and slow-burning tension are why you came, the book delivers. If you want plot to drive the pages, it may feel thin.
It also ends on another cliffhanger, the second in a row, so the story is not self-contained.
The response is warm but uneven: readers praise the banter and the expanding mythology, while some find the book too talky and dependent on romantic tension. The Nerd Daily called it a standout sequel. Fans of book one mostly say it matches the original.

High-stakes fantasy romance and paranormal fiction have been deeply shaped by expansive series such as From Blood and Ash and A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, which blend intricate worldbuilding with romantic tension. Author Jennifer L. Armentrout has authored dozens of novels across young adult, new adult, and adult categories, spanning fantasy, science fiction, urban fantasy, and contemporary romance. Writing both under her own name and under the pseudonym J. Lynn, her work has consistently reached bestseller lists and bridged the worlds of traditional and independent publishing.
Jennifer L. Armentrout began her publishing career in 2011 with the launch of her Covenant and Lux series. She quickly established herself as a prominent hybrid author, balancing self-publishing with traditional publisher contracts across houses such as Spencer Hill Press, Entangled Publishing, Harlequin Teen, Disney/Hyperion, and HarperCollins. Her 2013 novel Wait for You, released under her J. Lynn pen name, won the 2013 Reviewers Choice Award and expanded her readership in contemporary romance. Her contributions to young adult and paranormal fiction continued to earn accolades, including the 2014/2015 Moerser-Jugendbuch-Jury award for Obsidian and the 2015 Editor's Pick for Fall With Me.
Based in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Armentrout balances her writing schedule with managing major industry events. She is the founder and owner of ApollyCon and The Origin Event, annual fan conventions that feature over one hundred bestselling authors in young adult, new adult, and adult fiction alongside panel discussions and reader events. In early 2015, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a group of rare genetic disorders causing progressive cell breakdown in the retina and eventual vision loss. Since her diagnosis, advocating for and educating the public about the varying degrees of blindness has become a primary passion. Outside of writing and hosting events, she spends her time reading, watching zombie movies, and spending time with her husband, her Border Jack Apollo, Border Collie Artemis, six judgmental alpacas, two rude goats, and five fluffy sheep.
Armentrout's writing is defined by fast-paced plotting, witty character banter, and high emotional stakes centered on romantic relationships. Across her fantasy and paranormal series, her narratives frequently explore themes of agency, identity, fate, and moral ambiguity, placing her protagonists in high-pressure conflicts where personal affection conflicts with duty to kingdom or world. Her transition between urban fantasy, sci-fi romance, and high fantasy demonstrates a versatile approach to genre tropes, delivering both lighthearted contemporary stories and intricate multi-book sagas.
