§Synopsis

01

At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone.

Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Memoirs of personal resilience and candid advice literature have reached millions of readers through deeply honest personal narratives. Cheryl Strayed gained widespread recognition with her memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, which details her solo trek along the Pacific Crest Trail in 1995 following her mother's death. She further expanded her readership with Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Someone Who's Been There, a collected volume of empathetic advice essays originally written for the online magazine The Rumpus under the pseudonym Dear Sugar.

Career & Background

Born Cheryl Nyland in 1968 in Spangler, Pennsylvania, and raised in Minnesota, Strayed worked as a political organizer for women's advocacy groups before establishing her career as a writer. She published short stories and award-winning creative nonfiction in numerous magazines and literary journals, including The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, The Rumpus, Self, The Missouri Review, Allure, Elle, Nerve, and The Sun. Her essays were included in the Pushcart Prize anthology and twice selected for The Best American Essays, while Joyce Carol Oates chose her work for the opening piece in The Best New American Voices 2003.

Strayed made her book debut with Torch, a 2006 novel that was named a finalist for the Great Lakes Book Award and selected by The Oregonian as one of the top ten books of 2006 by Pacific Northwest authors. Her 2012 memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail became an international bestseller, selling millions of copies worldwide in forty languages, and was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated 2014 feature film. In addition to her books, Strayed has worked as a podcast host and public speaker, residing in Portland, Oregon.

Writing Style & Themes

Strayed's writing is characterized by radical candor, emotional vulnerability, and an exploration of grief, self-discovery, and forgiveness. Her non-fiction frequently addresses intimate personal crises—such as the loss of her mother, marital dissolution, and personal reckonings—converting private pain into universal observations on compassion and endurance. Through both her narrative memoir and her Dear Sugar advice columns, she combines conversational intimacy with precise prose, offering readers direct wisdom paired with deep empathy.
