Blending elements of speculative fiction, horror, fairy tales, and literary realism, short fiction and novels that bridge genres have established a distinct presence in contemporary literature, highlighted by the Pulitzer Prize-finalist short story collection Get in Trouble. The author Kelly Link has earned widespread acclaim for imaginative narratives that transform mundane domestic settings into eerie, enchanted landscapes populated by ghosts, superheroes, and mysterious entities.
From celebrated short story collections such as White Cat, Black Dog to her long-awaited debut novel The Book of Love, her fiction presents ordinary people encountering strange supernatural dilemmas with emotional depth and subtle humor.
Born in Miami, Florida, in 1969, Link attended Columbia University before completing a Master of Fine Arts program during the 1990s. Early in her career, she worked as a bookseller at the Avenue Victor Hugo Bookshop in Boston, where she met her future husband and collaborator, Gavin J. Grant. She published her first professional story, 'Water Off a Black Dog's Back,' in 1995, followed by award-winning early stories including 'The Specialist's Hat' and 'Louise's Ghost.' Alongside her writing, she co-founded the independent publishing house Small Beer Press with Grant, where they co-edited the literary zine Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet as well as genre-defining anthologies such as The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, Steampunk!, and Monstrous Affections.
Her debut story collection, Stranger Things Happen, appeared in 2001, launching a critically acclaimed career across short fiction that expanded through subsequent collections including Magic for Beginners and Pretty Monsters. Link's contributions to literature earned her a 2018 MacArthur Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, alongside multiple Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards. In 2024, she published her debut novel, The Book of Love, following three teenagers drawn into a supernatural conflict, further extending her reach into long-form fiction while continuing to write, teach, and publish.
Link's writing frequently falls under the umbrella of slipstream, magical realism, or contemporary dark fantasy, weaving together tropes from science fiction, folklore, horror, and quiet domestic drama. Critics and readers often compare her surreal inventiveness to writers such as Shirley Jackson, Angela Carter, and Haruki Murakami. Her prose balances precise character observations with unsettling, absurd, or uncanny events, treating absurd supernatural premises—such as convenience stores managed by zombies or houses containing secret dimensions—with understated seriousness.
A central theme across her stories is the permeable boundary between love, grief, longing, and terror. Her characters navigate strange rules and bargains in worlds where the ordinary and the mythical overlap seamlessly. By subverting traditional narrative expectations and genre conventions, Link creates layered fables that explore human connection, youth, mortality, and the unpredictable nature of desire.
