Contemporary romance fiction gained a distinct subversion of classic relationship tropes with the concept of men using romance literature to repair their relationships, most prominently featured in The Bromance Book Club. Author Lyssa Kay Adams introduced readers to a secret book club where men read romance novels to better understand women and navigate their emotional lives. The contemporary romance series uses humor and emotional depth to reimagine traditional relationship dynamics and male vulnerability.
Before pursuing fiction full-time, Adams spent nearly twenty years working as a newspaper journalist. Her habit of carrying a notebook and pencil began in early childhood before she could read or write, a practice that continued through college and her journalism career as she secretly jotted down story ideas in her free time. She read her first romance novel in the eighth grade after finding one on her grandmother's bookshelf. Adams published her debut novel, Seventh Inning Heat, in 2015, followed that same year by the RITA-nominated novella Wild in Rio. After sharing an idea on Twitter for a romance series featuring men in a secret book club, she moved from self-publishing to securing a major publishing contract. Writing under a pen name to protect her family's privacy, she works full-time from her home in Michigan with her dog, Domino.
Adams focuses on exploring nontoxic masculinity, challenging gender stereotypes, and unpacking emotional communication within romantic relationships. Her narratives frequently incorporate humor, secret notebooks, and meta-literary elements where characters learn from fictional romance tropes to address real-world problems. By centering male characters who actively discuss emotional health and support one another, her books blend lighthearted romantic comedy with thoughtful critiques of traditional societal expectations.
