§About the Author

Arkady Martine

3 books in catalog

Speculative fiction and space opera received renewed critical focus with the release of the Teixcalaan series, a duology centered on imperial bureaucracy, linguistic diplomacy, and cultural assimilation. Arkady Martine achieved immediate acclaim when her debut novel, A Memory Called Empire, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel, a distinction followed by a second consecutive Hugo Award for its sequel, A Desolation Called Peace.

Career & Background

Arkady Martine is the pen name of Dr. AnnaLinden Weller, who was born in New York City in 1985 to classical musician parents. Prior to publishing her debut novel, Weller established an academic career as a historian specializing in the Byzantine Empire, while also working as an urban planner and climate policy advisor. Her policy work includes serving with the New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department on grid modernization and climate resiliency. Having lived in Turkey, Canada, Sweden, and Baltimore, she resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her wife, author Vivian Shaw.

Writing Style & Themes

Martine's fiction draws heavily on her academic research into Byzantine history and her practical experience with public policy and risk communication. Her narratives explore how central empires interact with border territories, how propaganda and rhetoric shape institutional power, and how individual identities adapt under cultural hegemony. Through intricate world-building, her stories incorporate poetry, administrative mechanics, and linguistic subtlety as core elements of political intrigue and diplomacy.

Major Works

  • A Memory Called Empire — Published in 2019 as her debut novel, this space opera follows Ambassador Mahit Dzmare as she arrives at the capital of the Teixcalaanli Empire to investigate her predecessor's death while attempting to preserve her home station's independence. The novel won the 2020 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
  • A Desolation Called Peace — This 2021 sequel expands the Teixcalaan series by introducing a first-contact situation with an alien species on the empire's borders. It won the 2022 Hugo Award for Best Novel for its exploration of cross-species communication, diplomacy, and military ethics.
  • Three Faces of a Beheading — This short speculative fiction piece illustrates Martine's short-form work prior to her novel debut, exploring themes of ritual, statecraft, and power dynamics.
